The Soukh's of Marrakesh

The Jamaa El-Fna place is the main square of Marrakesh, used equally by locals and tourists. During the day it is predominantly occupied by orange juice stalls, Berbers with chained Barbary apes, water sellers in colourful costumes with traditional leather water-bags and brass cups, and snake charmers who will pose for photographs for tourists. There is even the open-air dentist at work.
As the day progresses the entertainment offerings change:

The snake charmers are taking a break, and in the afternoon and evening the square becomes more crowded, with Chleuh dancing-boys , story-tellers (telling their tales in Berber or Arabic, to an audience of locals), magicians, and peddlers of traditional medicines. As it gets dark the square fills with dozens of food-stalls, and the crowds are incredible. This place, on a Saturday or Sunday evening is pulsating with life. You will find everything imaginable.

The Soukh's of Marrakech

Then there are the Souks, the incredible markets of Marrakech. They start directly off the main square and go on and on in a never-ending maze of streets and side streets. Perfect to get really lost. Typically one enters the maze from the south. Through the jewellry, clothing, metalworking and wood working sections you are experiencing an overload of impressions. The Souks end in the north with the tanneries. These centuries old leather-tanning shops produce leather still with the old, manual methods. They are quite a site and quite a scent.
